About 1,000 people participate in procession

VELLORE: The Green World Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) Network, Palar Protection Movement and READ Trust will plant one lakh saplings in villages including hill villages on the western part of Vellore district this year, according to C.K. Dhanapal, founder of READ Trust and district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association.

He was speaking at a seminar organised on protecting the Palar, organised by the Green World NGOs Network, Palar Protection Movement, READ Trust and women’s self-help groups in connection with World Environment Day at Vaniyambadi on Thursday.

About 1,000 people including 200 women, belonging to various NGOs, participated in a procession taken out to create awareness of the need to protect the Palar, which caters to the irrigation needs of the farmers and the drinking water needs of the people of Vellore district.

Former MP and president of the Palar Protection Coordination Committee A. Jayamohan presided. K. Manjunatha, District Forest Officer, Tirupattur, and V. Sivaji Ganesan, chairman, Vaniyambadi Municipality, participated in the seminar.
