A newborn male baby was found abandoned at the foothills of Palamalai in Ammapet block of Erode district on Thursday morning.

Sources said farmers in Guruvareddiyur, a village located on the foothills of Palamalai, heard the cries of a baby and rushed to the spot. They found the infant wrapped in a cloth.

Farmers alerted police and the health officials before taking the newborn to the primary health centre in the village. The baby had ant bites all over the body. It was given first aid at the centre and later admitted to the Erode government hospital.

Hospital officials said that the baby was healthy when it was brought to the hospital. The newborn was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. The baby would be kept in the hospital till the authorities identified a care home for him. The condition of the baby is stable, they added.

The hospital authorities also informed the social welfare department.
