CUDDALORE: A squash court has been set up at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh at the Anna Stadium here. It has got its interior all set in wooden panels with air conditioning unit.

District Sports Officer T. Thirumugam, who assumed office a few weeks ago, told The Hindu that the squash court was yet to be inaugurated.

The stadium attracted good number of athletes, swimmers, and those who avidly participated in outdoor games such as football, volleyball and basketball. However, the response to squash is yet to be ascertained, Mr. Thirumugam said.

No coach had been appointed to the squash court here. When asked about prospects of promoting the game, he said that it could be possible only when schools and colleges set up such squash courts.

Squash happened to be an expensive game as a racquet itself would cost between Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 4,000. A ball would be equally expensive, he said.

Awareness of game and its rules was lacking and only when the court is thrown open, its significance could be known, Mr. Thirumugam said.

To start with, the court might attract competitors of inter-district and inter-State level tournaments.

Mr. Thirumugam also said that a third shuttle badminton court in the stadium would be declared open soon.
