Buildings coming up at an estimated cost of Rs 3.50 crore
MADURAI:Construction work on the new office for the Superintendent of Police (Madurai district), coming up on the 120-Feet-Road connecting Maatuthavani Integrated Bus Stand and Alagarkoil Road, would be completed by July, said Superintendent of Police M. Manohar here on Thursday.
Following approval from the State government, bhoomi puja for the work was performed in July, 2009.
Out of the 3.40 acres of land, the buildings were coming up on 32,000 square feet carpet area at an estimated cost of Rs 3.50 crore, he told The Hindu.
Presently, the office of the District Superintendent of Police is functioning near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in a heritage building.
People coming from far and near have been experiencing difficulties in reaching the SP's office due to non-availability of public transport.
Moreover, due to security reasons, the police are not permitting private vehicles around the temple and the narrow by-lanes in the vicinity are always flooded with vehicular movement. Hence, parking of vehicles too poses problems.
Public coming by buses have to alight at Simakkal bus stop or at Periyar bus stand and reach the office either by walk or by hiring an auto-rickshaw.
In public interest
In larger public interest, the police sent a proposal for shifting of the office to a spacious place.
Mr. Manohar said that the construction work, which is being carried out by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation, would be positively completed by July.
