Under a new guideline it has evolved, whereby research supervisor status is granted to teachers with one year experience or publication of one paper in international or national journals after the Ph.D. qualification, Bharathidasan University has identified 464

research supervisors.

A draft copy on Ph.D. guidelines presented before the Standing Committee on Academic Affairs by Syndicate Member P.Venuvanalingam, who headed the Sub-Committee that evolved new guidelines, states that for recognition as research supervisor, Ph.D. qualified teachers must have worked on regular basis for a minimum of one year in the Departments/ Schools/ Centres of the University and in recognised Research Centres of affiliated colleges or must have a proven research record in the form of a minimum of one research publication in professionally recognised national/ international journals, whichever is earlier. A research supervisor recognised to guide for Ph.D. can also guide M.Phil. scholars without obtaining a separate recognition as an M.Phil research supervisor.

The draft specifies the places of research leading to part-time/ full-time Ph.D, and categorises research scholars as full-time, part-time and independent (full-time or part-time), and throws light on research in other disciplines, composition of Doctoral Committee, Monitoring of Research, and registration particulars.

While full-time research scholars have to pursue full-time doctoral research under the guidance of a research supervisor, part-time research scholars would constitute teachers who are presently employed either on regular or temporary basis for a minimum of one year with continous service/ experience in any college/ school/ institute/ industry/ organisation.

Independent research scholars are those who carry out the doctoral research independently without the guidance of a supervisor.
