New parking area lacks basic amenities

Though the extended parking space on the parking stand on New Bus Stand premises provides ample space for motorists, it lacks basic amenities.

City Municipal Corporation has recently increased the parking space from 15,700 sq ft to 23,700 sq ft and increased the parking fee from Rs. 3 to a day Rs. 5 a day for a vehicle.

But since it is not covered, vehicles are left to the mercy of elements of weather. The space lacks concrete flooring and vehicles parked there sometimes fall getting damaged.

There are no fire extinguishers, emergency provisions, or safety measures in place at the extended area.

Drinking water and toilet facilities should be provided on the premises, say regulars to the place.

Details about parking fee, duration, and contact number of officials concerned should be displayed prominently to ensure transparency. Over 2,000 vehicles are parked here daily, as the place is convenient for those coming to the bus stand.

Corporation officials told The Hindu that concrete flooring of the premises and installing rooftop would cost about Rs. 35 lakh for the civic body. A proposal was being prepared, but implementation would take time, they added.

Some of the motorists said that the parking fee should be collected on hourly basis.
