The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister, urging her to establish new industries in south Tamil Nadu.

S. P. Jeyapragasam, president of the association, lauded the Chief Minister’s initiative of signing memorandum of understanding with as many as 12 industrial firms to set up units, which would generate employment opportunities for 1.40 lakh people. However, because all the units announced would be set up around Chennai, it would result in severe power shortage in other parts of the State, he pointed out.

He further stated that the southern districts of the State had land at low cost and cheap human resources, apart from having a good potential for industrial development. The functioning of Madurai airport as an international airport and the location of Tuticorin port nearby would enhance the opportunity for industrial development in the southern districts, he added.
