MADURAI: In view of the huge demand for the science stream in Class XI admissions, the Kendriya Vidyalayas have been issued a set of guidelines to be followed while admitting students this academic year.

A communication was sent to the Principals of KVs in the State that all eligible students should be sequenced based on aggregate of total marks scored in Class X and not on the basis of the aggregate of mathematics/ science alone.

Official sources here told The Hindu on Friday that the Education Officer of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (Chennai Region), P. Devakumar, had written to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Principals on May 29 about the procedure to be followed at the time of Class XI admissions. Three streams are offered in KV: science, commerce and humanities. “The guidelines have to be followed for Class XI admissions in every KV. Merit list has to be prepared from among the list of applicants and admissions will have to done taking into account the aggregate marks,” officials said. As per the communication, fresh admissions for Class XI should be done only after accommodating the eligible students of the same Kendriya Vidyalaya who studied Class X in that school. Thereafter, admission would be given to students of other KVs of the same station/nearby KVs and students coming on transfer from KVs elsewhere.

According to Mr. Devakumar’s letter, fresh admissions for non-KV students should be considered on or after July 1. “Till last year, several students used to take Transfer Certificates after completing Class X and join State Board schools. But, this year it is not so,” said V. Rajagopal, Principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya (Narimedu), here.

Parents disappointed

Meanwhile, a few parents said the latest guidelines were a ‘delayed communication’ as admissions were already made for some students in the streams they had asked for. They have written to the Assistant Commissioner of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chennai, and to the Madurai District Collector on Thursday asking them to intervene in the matter.

“After the admissions were made, the Principal called the already admitted students of the science group along with their parents asking them to change to the commerce group. Students of Kendriya Vidyalaya are forced to study subjects they are not willing to take,” the letter said.
