TUTICORIN: Collector R. Palaniyandi has said that eight more hostels run by the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department for students from Scheduled Caste/Schedule Tribe in the district, functioning on rented premises, would be shifted to department-owned edifices shortly.

Speaking to reporters here recently, he said that the construction of new buildings at Srivaikundam, Kovilpatti, M.K.N. Nagar, Subbammalpuram , Eral, Kovilpatti and Kamanaickenpatti, had been taken up at a unit cost of Rs 31.5 lakh.

The new edifices would have accommodation, hall, kitchen and toilet facilities.

"At present, 34 (15 for girls and 19 for boys) out of the total 48 SC/ST hostels in the district are functioning from Government buildings," he said.

As many as 731 textbooks, 3,824 notebooks and 92 slates were distributed free to students studying at 11 Adi Dravidar schools during the current academic year.
