A bridge in final stages of construction by the State Highways Department across River Cauvery linking Lakhapuram in Erode district and Kokkarayanpettai in Namakkal district is likely to be a new-year gift for people in the two districts.

The bridge will prevent the need for people from Namakkal district to go through congested roads of Palliapalayam and Erode city to reach the Karur road.

Easy route

According to official sources, the bridge constructed as part of the Ring Road project would be ready by this month-end.

Once the bridge is opened, people from Modakurichi, Lakhapuram, Solar and Kasipalayam will be saved of the trouble of taking a circumlocutory route to Namakkal district.

Getting into the city and crossing Pallipalayam is not only a longer route, the duration of travel also gets extended due to the heavy traffic, t he officials said.

From Kokkarayanpettai, the about 15-km stretch to Tiruchengode is a ‘major district road’ that could be utilised by heavy vehicles.

The bridge, officials said, would reduce entry of lorries into Erode city to a significant extent.
