An indoor basketball court, constructed at a cost of Rs. 58 lakh in Tiruvannamalai District Sports Complex, is all set to be inaugurated.
Already there is an outdoor basketball stadium in the complex and the new facility adds up to the strength of basketball infrastructure in the reputed complex connected with a sports hostel for girls.
The floor is paved with concrete and the roof is made of Galvalume sheets (zinc-aluminum alloy coated sheet steel). The court is equipped with flood lights and fiber glass boards.
Speaking to The Hindu , District Sports Officer K. Pugazhendhi said the sports hostel attached with the complex has 25 girls dedicated to the sport of basketball. This facility will be of great use to them. Though the girls played in international level in other sports like handball, the basketball team is relatively new and requires facilities that will enable them to engage in relentless practice, not affected by climatic interventions like harsh sun or rain. The new facility will ensure just that.
“Though the court will be helpful to sports hostel students, other players are also welcome to play, because the sports hostel inmates would be playing here only during morning and evening. During the day it will be free,” Mr. Pugazhendhi said.
“We have a dedicated basketball coach here and he will help budding players to grow in stature. In the upcoming indoor stadium too, we have a basketball court with wooden floor, a more sophisticated facility. Hence opportunities are bright for students opting basketball as their career in Tiruvannamalai district,” he added.
