In a bid to discourage refugees from undertaking dangerous journeys by boat to Australia and curb the activities of human traffickers, the Australian government has rolled out a new policy for asylum-seekers. Disclosing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, Acting Consul General for South India Stuart Campbell said that under the new policy Australia and Papua New Guinea had entered into a Regional Settlement Agreement on 19 July 2013.

Going by the agreement, which came into immediate effect, anyone travelling unlawfully by boat to Australia without a visa would be transferred to Papua New Guinea for processing and assessment.
