Most of them are beedi-rollers and labourers
TIRUNELVELI: A group of residents from Nehru Nagar under ward 48 of the corporation submitted a petition to Mayor A.L. Subramanian on Tuesday seeking free house site pattas.
The petitioners, mostly beedi-rollers and labourers, said they had been living at Nehru Nagar for more than 40 years and paying the water and other taxes to the local body though they were living on the government poramboke land.
Though the government had ordered to give the poor free house site pattas for the poramboke lands on which they were living for three years, the revenue officials were ignoring their repeated appeals, they alleged.
“When we submitted petitions to the revenue officials, they asked us, all from below poverty line families, to pay the market price of the lands. Hence, the corporation and the revenue officials should take steps to give free house site pattas for the lands,” they said.
