SALEM: A team of nature lovers and Panamarathupatti MLA Rajendran distributed cotton bags to consumers at the Hasthampatti Uzhavar Santhai here on Friday to mark the World Environment Day.

Participants in the programme, organised by the Appusamy Hospital in close coordination with a few citizens, explained the serious threat faced by Mother Earth due to the extensive use of polythene bags and plastic containers.

Waste

The use of such bags had led to the creation of a large quantity of non-biodegradable waste, which had started choking the waterways and spoiling the environment, it was pointed out.

The participants urged the people to use eco-friendly products to protect the environment.

Every citizen should participate in the initiative to save Mother Earth.

People should be aware of the negative effects of using plastic containers.

Retired judge G. Venugopal, lawyers A. P. Appusamy, Dr. A. Kumaran and Dr. K. Vijayalakshmi and nature lovers from different parts of the city participated in the programme.
