A national-level painting competition for school students on the theme “Magic of Hands” is being held in connection with the 12{+t}{+h}Triennial Congress of International Federation of Societies for Surgery of Hand (IFSSH) and the 9{+t}{+h}Triennial Congress of the International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy (IFSHT), scheduled from March 4 to 8 in new Delhi.

The total prize money is Rs.10 lakh and the brochure for the event – a tree with its branches and roots depicted in the form of hands – was released recently in New Delhi by United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, organising secretary of the Congress and Coimbatore-based limb reconstruction surgeon S. Raja Sabapathy said in a release on Saturday.

The Head of the Department of Plastic Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery of Ganga Hospital here said the painting competition was being held to sensitise young students to the importance of hand and how well it had to be protected.

Under the painting competition, the student who wins the first prize gets Rs.20,000 and the winner’s school gets Rs.5 lakh. As sum of Rs.10,000 each will be given to 49 finalists.

Dr. Raja Sabapathy said that when he and organising secretary Rakesh Khazanchi met Mrs. Gandhi, she was appreciative of the competition as it would generate awareness on the functions of the hands, what could pose threat to the limbs and what needed to be done to protect these. Dr. Khazanchi is the Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon near New Delhi.

This competition is open for students of classes 6 to 9. A maximum of 20 students are invited to participate from one school. The students also need to give a title to their paintin. The last date for submission of entries is February 12. The top 50 paintings will be selected by a panel of eminent Judges. This will be communicated to the winners by February 15.
