Panel to procure 30,000 sets for distribution by September

CHENNAI: The committee, constituted for the scheme to distribute colour televisions, which met here on Tuesday at the Secretariat, decided to commence the process in September.

It wants to procure 30,000 sets by then and will float national tenders because of time constraints. The guidelines of the committee of experts will be followed while procuring the sets. Global tenders will be floated for procuring television sets in the second phase.

Initially, residents of Periyar memorial Samathuvapurams (an attempt at social engineering where people of all castes live together) in each district will be given the television sets, says a press release.

In The Nilgiris, where there is no Samathuvapuram, the sets will be given to Tribals. In Chennai city, it will be distributed in slum board tenements in one area each in north Chennai and south Chennai. It will also be given to all those in rehabilitation homes.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin, MLAs D.Sudarsanam, G.K.Mani, Y.Sivapunniyam, K.Selvam, A.H.Abdul Basid, M.Jagan Moorthy and officials, including Chief Secretary L.K.Tripathy, attended.
