VELLORE: The National Highways Department has taken over from the State Highways Department maintenance of the Cuddalore-Chittoor Road and the Katpadi-Gudiyatham Road, according to Durai Murugan, Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons.

Inaugurating the new bridge across the Palar connecting Vellore and Virudhambut at a function in Virudhambut on Friday, Mr. Durai Murugan said the Ministry of Highways and Minor Ports had sanctioned five more bridges in Vellore district – Kangeyanallur to Collectorate (Rs.7.50 crore), Thengal to Melvisharam (Rs.27.80 crore), Sadgar (Rs.6.40 crore), Kalavai to Vazhappandhal (Rs.5 crore) and Devasthanam bridge in Vaniyambadi.

He requested Minister for Highways Vellakkoil M.P. Saminathan to widen the road from Katpadi to Thorappadi for catering to the increasing traffic on this road.

Revive scheme

He also requested him to revive the rural roads scheme to lay roads in villages. The abolition of the scheme deprived the government of the opportunity of granting requests of villagers for laying short distance roads in villages, he said.
