Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) hosted an event to mark ‘National Blood Donation Day’ on the hospital premises.

Detailing the importance of blood donation, Dr.T. Kasi Viswanathan, consultant hematologist at the MMHRC, said even if one per cent of the population was ready to donate blood, there would be no deficiency during emergencies.

“Voluntary blood donors are always safe donors and one unit of blood donated can be infused to at least three persons,” he said.

“Through the blood donated by donors across the district, we have saved the lives of many people affected by dengue,” he added.

Certificates and prizes were distributed to more than 50 colleges and NGOs which had donated blood.

While KLN Engineering College was honoured for donating 378 units of blood, Madurai Nagasiva Polytechnic College and Keelakarai Mohamed Sathak Engineering College were felicitated for donating 249 units and 228 units respectively. Individual donors who had donated blood throughout the year were also honoured by actor Ilavarasu, who was the chief guest.

Senior consultant physician Dr.P. Krishnamoorthi, Lions district governor M. Muthuramalingam and secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society V.M. Jose were also present.
