Police bust a narcotics smuggling racket with the arrest of nine-member gang here recently. Narcotic substance worth Rs.90 lakh meant for smuggling to Malaysia was seized from them.

Vehicle check

A police team comprising inspectors P. Saravanan of Thanjavur east and M. Saravanan of Naducauvery, were conducting surprise check of vehicles at Kodimarathu moolai in the town recently when they intercepted a car.

When the occupants of the car travelling in a suspicious manner gave evasive replies, the police team checked the vehicle. The police found 18 kilos of Methaqualone (narcotics) kept hidden in the car.

Attempt to smuggle

On interrogation, occupants of the car Sheik Dawood (42) of Ilayankudi in Ramanathapuram district, Kaleel Rehman (48) of Royapettah, Chennai, Jammakhan (46), Najimudeen (45), and Maideen, driver, revealed that they had purchased the narcotics from Abdul Raheem of Burma Bazaar, Chennai, and were trying to smuggle it to Malaysia. Lenin Ahmed (57) of Chepauk, Mohamed Rafiq, Farooq and Peer Mohamed, all from Thanjavur, were said to have assisted them in this clandestine activity.

The police recovered the narcotics and arrested all the nine persons.
