The periodical rise in the prices of petrol and diesel besides LPG will cause great hardship to the common masses and the proposed plan for foreign direct investment in telecom and defence sectors will only result in the re-pledging of the country to the multi national companies, said R. Nallakannu, national executive member of the Communist Party of India.
Speaking at the State-level dharna organised by the party here on Thursday, Mr. Nallakannu said that announcing an increase in the prices of petrol or diesel to protect the interest of private firms had become a regular schedule of the Centre in the recent past.
Referring to the efforts made by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the suspension of the coal-bed methane exploration project on 691 sq km in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts, Mr. Nallakannu appreciated her efforts and wanted a permanent solution to it to protect the interest of farmers.
The Centre should study the project, including its adverse effects on agricultural activity in these two districts.
Lingam, MP from Sivakasi, T. Indirajith, district secretary, and K. Suresh, urban district secretary, participated in the protest.
