They treated an old woman living alone

Police on Thursday arrested five persons, including a college student, on the charges of murdering a woman at Reddiyarpalayam.

Briefing the media, Deputy Inspector-General of Police I.D. Shukla said the accused had confessed that they strangulated S. Vijayalakshmi (60) a few days ago and decamped with cash and gold ornaments.

The accused were identified as Raja Ganesh alias Ajmal (24) of Periya Kanganankuppam in Cuddalore, H. Sadam Hussain (22) of Kammiyampettai in Cuddalore district, B. Tamizh Selvam (26) of Reddiarpalayam, P. Manikandan (24) of Mudaliarpet and Kutty Anand.

The gang chose to murder the victim as she was living alone. They entered the house on the pretext of checking out the building for rent. Even as the victim was showing them around the house, two of the accused strangulated her. Main accused Ajmal was arrested at the Chennai airport.

Valuables of the victim including a ‘thali,’ six bangles were seized from a pawn broker in Cuddalore. The accused were produced before the Judicial Magistrate I court in Puducherry for remand.

The DIG commended T. Bairavaswamy, Superintendent of Police (South), C. Maran, Inspector, Mudaliarpet, Veera Balakrishna, Inspector STF, M. Ganesh, R. Inian, Vengatachalapathy, Sub-Inspectors, and policemen of South region for cracking the case.
