A murder accused gave the slip to escort police when he was being taken to the Salem Central Prison on Wednesday.

Police said Manese, a lorry driver from Tirunelveli had allegedly murdered his aunt Suganthi from Tuticorin during March last year when she rejected his proposal for her daughter Angel (20). He was arrested and later enlarged on bail.

The accused went to Angel's house and attempted to kill her on December 10 last year. Based on a complaint, the Omalur police arrested him and he was remanded to custody.

On Wednesday, police brought him to Omalur court and after the hearings took him back to Salem Central Prison. On their way he escaped.

Superintendent of Police Y. John Nicholson placed two head constables attached to Omalur Police station under suspension.
