Forty-five-year-old D. Gopal alias Gopi, an ex-Serviceman of Teachers’ Colony, Gudiyatham, who was suspected in a murder case was declared dead on arrival at the Government Hospital, Gudiyatham after he became unconscious during an inquiry at Melpatti police station on Tuesday evening.

According to his relatives, Gopal was taken for inquiry to the station on Sunday in connection with the murder of Sukumar (41), a teacher of Kamakshmiammanpettai near Gudiyatham. The body of the teacher, who was missing from Friday, was found in the Thattankuttai lake near Gudiyatham. Gopal was picked up for inquiry on Sunday in connection with the death.

Gopal’s relatives staged a demonstration at the hospital demanding “action against the police personnel responsible for the death.” The body was taken to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai, for post-mortem.

P. Vijayakumar, Superintendent of Police, Vellore, told The Hindu that Gopal was taken to the station only on Tuesday morning. “The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained”, he said.
