Collector G. Govindaraj said steps were being taken to construct multipurpose indoor stadium on Government Chikkanna Arts College premises in Tirupur and commission it by June 2014. “We have estimated the project cost tentatively at Rs. 4.78 crore. The Public Works Department has been asked to come out with a report evaluating expenditure on the project which will be built on a public-private partnership (PPP) mode,” he told The Hindu.

Apart from the Rs 50 lakh allocated by the State Government, the administration has received Rs 13.64 lakh from private school owners, Rs 10 lakh from cinema owners association, Rs 2.5 lakh from owners of private colleges and Rs 15 lakh from two sports associations.

Knitwear exporters in Tirupur cluster had promised to collectively contribute Rs 10 lakh towards the project.

The indoor stadium, as per the plans, would come up on 4.85 acre with facilities to conduct badminton, gymnastics, volleyball and few more sports.
