An eight-year-old boy died in a road accident in Arumbakkam on Tuesday, after the motorcycle he was travelling on was knocked down by an MTC bus.

Police said the victim was Bala Varun, a native of Ramanathapuram. The boy had come to Chennai to celebrate Pongal with his uncle Malaivelu (30) and his family. Malaivelu is a police constable attached to the Otteri police station and resided at the police quarters in Tondiarpet.

Around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Bala Varun and his uncle were heading to Koymabedu on Malaivelu’s motorcycle. When they were on Poonamallee High Road in Arumbakkam, an MTC bus (route number 159) rammed into the motorcycle.

Malaivelu and BalaVarun were thrown on to the road. The boy suffered severe head injuries while Malaivelu escaped with minor injuries. Malaivelu rushed him to a private hospital nearby. As his condition was critical, doctors there advised he be taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. On the way there, the boy succumbed, police said.
