To have 5 doctors, lawyer, paediatrician, social worker
: Doctors Opposing Sex Selected Termination of Pregnancy (DOSST) Cell was set up in the district to prevent foeticide.
The cell has five doctors, a lawyer, paediatrician and a social worker. The members will also monitor scanning centres, persons scanning patients in these centres and also work for improvement of male-female sex ratio in the district.
Besides, its members will intensify the campaign against sex selected termination of pregnancy among the people, explain dwindling male and female ratio and also enlighten Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act 1994.
The ultimate aim was to prevent sex selected termination of pregnancy, said L. Uma Devi, Secretary, Dindigul Society of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, while addressing the inaugural function of the cell at IMA Hall, here on Sunday.Doctors, gynaecologists with diploma or degree recognised by the Medical Council of India only could perform the scanning. Others should not do it. The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of Indiahad already advised district-level societies to form DOSST. The cell will also disseminate knowledge on obstetrics and gynaecology.
The society president J. Amala Devi presided over. The centre was inaugurated by the Collector N. Venkatachalam. Eminent gynaecologists from Madurai shared their experience at its annual Continuing Medical Education Programme held as part of the inaugural function.
