Reports of buildings being put up without clearance

Udhagamandalam: The civic administration is in the process of conducting a survey of unauthorised buildings which have come up within municipal limits recently, according to the Udhagamandalam Municipal Commissioner, L.S. Girija.

Speaking to ‘The Hindu' here on Wednesday, she said that even after action had been initiated against 1,337 buildings in and around the town, the administration had received reports of some buildings being put up without the necessary clearance.

Stating that it was obvious that the those putting up such structures are being encouraged by persons connected with the municipality in different capacities, she said that appropriate action will be taken and added that inspections will be carried out periodically.

To a query, she said that the civic administration was aware of the proliferating encroachments on footpaths and their misuse by vendors. Suitable action will be taken to tackle the problem.

Lamenting that growing difficulties on the fiscal front were affecting routine maintenance and improvement works, she said that it was mainly on account of increasing commitments and difficulties associated with collecting dues.

Adverting to the ongoing drive to collect tax dues, Ms. Girija said that buildings which had not been assessed for water and other taxes were also being identified.

Officials had also been asked to find out how many underground drainage connections were yet to be regularised.

She hoped that the building owners would voluntarily pay the usage charges.
