Resolution passed at council meeting

KANCHEEPURAM: A resolution urging the Municipal Commissioner to issue disqualification notice to 20th ward councillor and former Municipal Chairman K. Arumugham of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was passed at the municipal council meeting here on Wednesday.

The resolution, moved by vice-chairman G. Sambandam, said the councillor did not attend three meetings convened by Chairman V. Rajendran between November, 2006 and February, 2007.

A caution notice (C 2/296/2007 dated 11.01.2007) was also issued to Mr. Arumugham from the Municipal Commissioner's office. Hence, as per sec.50 (1) (i) of the Tamil Nadu Municipalities Act, 1920, the councillor became automatically disqualified from acting as an elected representative of the civic body, the resolution said.

When this resolution was placed before the council for its consent, DMK councillors were not present in the council hall, as they had staged a walkout.

Claiming that the Chairman violated rules and regulations on tabling of resolutions, at the meeting held on February 23, the DMK councillors, led by A. Sekar, moved out of the hall before the resolution on disqualification was taken up for discussion.

Heated argument

Congress councillor K. Aranganathan, who accompanied the DMK councillors in the walkout, returned and sought an explanation from the Chairman for setting aside two resolutions forwarded by him. Mr. Rajendran asked the councillor why he took part in the meeting convened by DMK councillors on February 12 , though he had acknowledged the receipt of postponement notice of the meeting. When the resolutions were taken up for discussion, Mr. Aranganathan was not present , the Chairman said.
