The Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA) and Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) will soon develop city-specific mobility plans with emphasis on non-motorised transportation.

A memorandum of understanding is to be signed between the two agencies soon. Sources in the CMA said the proposal is at an advanced stage. About 120 cities and towns in the State are to be covered. Initially, larger corporations including Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Tirupur, and Tambaram will be covered.

ITDP’s regional director Shreya Gadepalli said specific action plans would be drawn up collaboratively with other stakeholders.

“As cities grow, they have transportation problems. Smart cities realise the only solution is to improve public transportation and create and promote facilities to cycle and walk, along with policies to dissuade people from using private motorised transport,” she said.
