A motivation camp to usher in healthy banking habits among women self help groups was organised here by the Indian Overseas Bank at Semmanarkoil recently.
The camp was a follow-up to the problems discussed at the district-level consultative meeting with the banks last month. In view of the ‘decelerating banking habits' among women SHGs, the IOB as the district lead bank was called upon to organise block-level SHG motivation camps in the district.
According to the district lead bank, a road map has been designed through which every bank branch in the district will be roped in with coordinators who have been selected from NGOs or PLFs (Panchayat Level Federations). Under the arrangement, the branch managers are advised to coordinate with the coordinator to ensure fruitful coordination between bankers, PLFs and SHGs in grading, credit proposals, entrepreneurial training, loan disbursement, recovery and other support facilities.
According D.Sankara Narayanan, Senior Regional Manager, IOB, the structured management has resulted in recovery of Rs.24 lakh from 118 defaulted SHGs during the camp. Further, joint efforts may help PLFs to strengthen themselves by way of credit budgeting. Additionally, various avenues for availing bank loans under Centre-sponsored capital subsidy schemes by SHGs and PLFs were explained by K.Venugopal, AGM – NABARD during the course of the camp. The lead bank has proposed to conduct similar motivation camps in all eleven blocks of the district, says A.Thanikachalam, lead district manager. The camp witnessed loan disbursements worth Rs.44 lakh to 36 beneficiaries by the Collector.
Rajasekaran, project officer, Magalir Thittam and Agoram DM, Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing Development Corporation were present.
