World Space Week celebrations were organised by the department of electronics and communication engineering of Shri Angalamman College of Engineering and Technology (SACET) on Friday and Saturday in the city.
World Space Week was declared in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly as an international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to the betterment of mankind. The largest annual space event in the world is celebrated every year from October 4 to 10.
The celebrations were organised by the college with the aim of motivating engineering students to become scientists in space research organisations and contribute to the society with a view to protect earth from hazards caused by pollution.
As a mark of respect to the Indian space programme and astronauts, students of the college created models of a few rockets and satellites. They also took oath and went on a procession reading quotations about saving earth. Raghavan, professor, NIT-Tiruchi, spoke about the importance of microwaves in space research and in the healthcare industry.
