To encourage Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the State government through Tamil Nadu State Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) will create seven more industrial estates in six districts.

Announcing this in the Assembly on Wednesday, Minister for Rural Industries P. Mohan said steps were being taken to create industrial estates in Villupuram (Kattu Vannanjur), Dharmapuri (Parvathanahalli and Echampatti), Ariyalur (Mallur), Cuddalore (Periyanesalur), Ramnad (Sakkarakottai) and Namakkal (Vettambadi) districts.

“Currently, SIDCO is operating 94 industrial estates and eight are run by the Department of Industries and Commerce. Twelve industrial estates are in the pipeline and would become operational soon,” a department official told The Hindu on Wednesday.

In other announcements, Mr. Mohan said the government would provide Rs.2 crore for upgrading the infrastructural facilities of electrical and electronics industrial estates in Hosur and Salem and Ceramic Industrial Estate in Vridhachalam and a Common Facility Centre would be formed in Kakkalur, Tiruvallur district, at a cost of Rs.25 lakh.

Five Chemical Testing Laboratories – Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem and Tuticorin – will be allotted Rs.2 crore for strengthening the infrastructure and Rs.15 lakh towards purchase of additional testing equipment.

The Government Scientific Glass Training Centre in Guindy provides specialised certificate course in the manufacture of scientific glass apparatus. Due to the rapid growth in industrialisation, the enrolment ratio of students had come down recently and hence the Glass Training Centre was not in the position to offer the certificate course.

The government had decided to shift the training centre in Guindy to Coimbatore and integrate it with the existing Government Production Centre for Scientific Glass Apparatus. A sum of Rs.30 lakh had been earmarked for revamping the centre, the Minister said.

Mr. Mohan said seven digital weighing scales would be purchased for seven out of 15 Industrial Co-operative Tea Factories for which Rs.50 lakh had been sanctioned and Rs.7.50 lakh for nine Industrial Co-operative Societies to strengthen its computer and printers, he said.
