Winners to battle it out with other regional finalists at the all-India finals in Chennai on December 7

A sudden buzz of excitement, shrill calls of ‘sir’, scramble for microphones and a clamouring of voices broke out halfway through the regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz 2012 here on Friday. The source of the cacophony was a portrait hidden behind the grid of questions that revealed glimpses of the identity of the hidden personality. While those on the dais decided to play it safe, the audience comprising of enthused quizzers who could not make it to the finals found it hard to suppress themselves.

This year’s edition of the popular school quiz seemed a straightforward affair with V.Shrivathsan and N.Achyuth of Sri Vageesha Vidhyashram taking a clear lead in the first lap of the quiz. But they ultimately finished a distant second behind title winners Joshua Jasper and Jose Levison of Montfort School who came from behind stealthily to steal the thunder with a 100 point lead. The format of the quiz that allowed two teams to answer each question, one directly on the microphone and the other by buzzer, helped the boys scoop up points. A case of fortune favouring the brave, their risks with the buzzer paid off.

Winnie the Pooh, Parasurama’s parents, Carnatic ragas, memorials of prime ministers, city of golden fortress (Jaisalmer) and names of nuclear reactors such as Apsara and Purnima featured in the quiz. The quiz devised by The Hindu ’s resident quizmaster V.V. Ramanan was a straightforward affair with few twists.

The one question that left both audience and finalists stumped was a googly. ‘Guess the artist depicted by Pablo Picasso in his painting?’ It was a self-portrait.

The written prelims featuring 25 questions were taken by 248 teams from 66 schools. Ironically, the team that topped the prelims, A.Adavaith and M.Sivaramakrishnan, of S.B.I.O.A Matric Higher Secondary School finished at the bottom in the finals, their run with the buzzer proving unlucky. The only girls team of P.B.Aishwarya and S.Swetha from S.B.I.O.A and the second Montfort team of M. Mughil and Sudeep Rath were the other finalists. M.V.Kaarthik Raja and K.Vignesh of Alpha Wisdom Vidyashram were the second runners-up.

P.Murugesan, chancellor, PRIST University, Thanjavur, giving away the prizes, appreciated the high quality of the quiz. The winners would battle it out with other regional finalists at the all-India finals in Chennai on December 7.

Regional winners and runners-up walked away with trophies and cash prizes of Rs. 12,000, Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 6,000. At stake at the grand finale are cash prizes worth Rs. 50,000 , Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 30,000 for the winning teams.
