The Tiruvarur district unit of the CPI (M) urged the monitoring officers appointed by the State government for assessing flood in the delta districts to meet the representatives of farmers organisations, farm labourers’ organisations, political parties and other outfits before they finalise their assessment report.

In a statement here on Thursday, I.V.Nagarajan, Tiruvarur district secretary of the CPI (M), said that K.Gopal, monitoring officer for Tiruvarur district, inspected the flood affected areas along with Collector S.Natarajan and held discussions with officials of various departments.

As Tiruvarur is a crop-intensive and flood-prone district, the officer should hear the views of all stakeholders to arrive at the exact nature of damage.

In future State and Central governments should instruct officials who are sent to assess flood damage to hold consultation with all concerned parties. Mr.Nagarajan said that the damages assessed by officials were far less than the actual damages in the district.
