Mineral water to be sold at Rs. 2 a litre
MADURAI: The Southern Railway plans to install mobile phone/laptop chargers on all trains. By March, all air-conditioned coaches in trains maintained by the zone are expected to have the facility.
According to railway sources, chargers would be provided on either end of sleeper class compartments while AC coaches would have two in each bay.
The Electrical Department had been entrusted with the task. The move follows increase in the use of mobile phones on trains and the demand from passengers seeking chargers on all classes of travel, particularly long-distance trains.
In Madurai division, 100 of the 350 sleeper class coaches have been provided with chargers. “We will be covering all AC coaches in a couple of weeks. It was agreed in principle by the Railway Board to provide chargers in new coaches. Southern Railway has extended the facility to old ones as well,” Divisional Railway Manager Hemant Kumar told The Hindu on Monday.
In a new initiative, the division has planned to provide mineral water by installing high capacity reverse osmosis plant at Madurai station. It will be sold at Rs. 2 a litre using a vending machine.
“We are looking at providing purified water under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Depending on the response, the facility will be extended to other major stations. The computerised reservation complex in Madurai is being air-conditioned.”
