Police chased away a mob of about 250 villagers who resisted the attempts of the police to prevent an illegal bull race being organised by a group of people in Melarasambattu village in Veppanguppam police station limits in Vellore district on Tuesday night.

The group comprising persons from Melarasambattu and nearby villages were getting ready to conduct the race without official permission. On hearing about it, the Veppanguppam police station reached the spot and prevented the organisers from conducting the race.

The organisers wanted permission to conduct a limited bull race towards the local temple. When police refused permission, the mob attacked the policemen who chased away the members.

Further reinforcements were rushed under the leadership of Vijayakumar, DSP, Ambur, to control the situation. Five persons - K. Ramesh (42), G. Kuttiappan (62), S. Saravanan (40) and M. Jothi (40), all of Madigam village, and S. Thirukumaran (40) of Bangalamedu village - have been arrested in connection with the incident.
