The call for private school buses to go off the roads in protest against the conditions being imposed by the State Government evoked a mixed response in the Nilgiris.

Though the Federation of Nursery, Primary, Matric, Higher Secondary and Other Private Schools claimed in a statement issued here that 232 buses belonging to 175 schools had been part of the strike, police sources said that the buses plied as usual in Ooty. Pointing out that as per the records of the Regional Transport Office there were 196 buses in the district, they said that those in Gudalur, Coonoor and Kotagiri did not ply.

Meanwhile, the Federation has in a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the district administration and the Regional Transport Office pointed out that the conditions cannot be implemented. It hoped that the Chief Minister will reconsider the order.
