A minor landslip occurred near Kottachedu village on the Kuppanur - Yercaud ghat road near here on Wednesday.
Incessant rains during the past few days, according to officials, had triggered the slide. The road was covered with debris, including small boulders and slush, for nearly 600 metres. When officials from the State Highways rushed to the spot, they found nearly one feet high sand and slush, had covered the road.
Workers have been brought to the venue to remove the slush and debris. Since water had been cascading from near-by slope, the work got hampered. As the road works would take long hours, traffic on the Kuppanur – Yercaud road remained disrupted. Vehicles were diverted through the main ghat road between Salem and Yercaud.
Officials hoped that the restoration works would be completed soon and traffic could be restored by Thursday noon.
Meanwhile, rains lashed Salem on Wednesday afternoon affecting the Deepavali sale in Bazaar streets here. Salem and its suburbs have been experiencing steady rains for the past one week disrupting normal life.
