TIRUCHI: The Minister for Labour Welfare, P. Annavi, on Friday inaugurated the Farmers' Protection Scheme at Thuraiyur in the district.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the scheme would benefit an estimated 1.37 crores small and medium farmers in the State. The scheme would benefit both farmers and their families, he said.

He distributed cash assistance to the tune of Rs.6. 06 lakhs to 150 farmers.

A total of 122 brides and grooms and five farmers got the marriage assistance. Fourteen pregnant women got financial aid. The Minister gave assistance of Rs.82,400 to six persons under the Girl Child Protection Scheme. He appealed to the farmers to take maximum advantage of the programme.

The Collector, K. Nanda Kishore, in his presidential address said steps were being taken for distribution of identity cards to 2.90 lakh farmers in the district.

The Chairman of Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, M. Paranjothi, and the MLA, R. Saroja, were among those who spoke.
