`Rs. 144 crore, disbursed as loans to 65,000 farmers, was waived'
TIRUCHI: Transport Minister K.N. Nehru distributed waiver certificates to those who had secured farm loans from cooperative banks at a function held at Ariyamangalam here on Tuesday.
He said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government was implementing promises it made during elections, which included waiver of crop loans taken by farmers.
He said the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks (PACBs) were essential for every village as it played a vital role in helping poor farmers by giving them credit for agricultural purposes. As the cooperative institutions played a significant role, it was necessary to protect them.
Forest Minister N. Selvaraj said the State Government was keen on helping the farming community.
Collector Ashish Vachhani, who presided, said a sum of Rs. 144 crore, which was disbursed as farm loans through cooperative banks to 65,000 farmers in the district, had been waived. Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman, Special Officer, District Central Cooperative Bank, R. Ambikeswaran, Joint Registrar, Cooperative Societies, A.K. Rajan, and Tiruverambur MLA K.N. Sekaran spoke.
The Transport Minister distributed fresh crop loans amounting to Rs. 2.52 lakh to 23 farmers on the occasion.
