Minister distributes assistance worth Rs. 3.25 cr. to beneficiaries

‘Over 700 cooperative societies functioning in district’

Minister for Higher Education P. Palaniappan distributed welfare assistance worth Rs. 3.25 crore to 687 beneficiaries during the 59th Cooperative Week Celebrations in Dharmapuri on Friday.

After distributing the assistance, the Minister said that there were 20 branches of the District Central Cooperative Bank, 131 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks, a Tribal Cooperative Society in Sitheri hills, 2 Primary Agriculture Producers Cooperative and Marketing Societies and 47 Employees Cooperative Thrift Societies among others in the district. Totally, about 781 cooperative societies were functioning in the district.

Fertilizers worth Rs.15.11 crore had been sold through the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies in the district till October. Agriculture Seva Centres had been opened by the 24 cooperative societies to extend loans for purchase of power tillers, tractors and tillers. The government had extended Rs. 91 lakh as subsidy for the purpose last year.

Crop loans to the extend of Rs. 61.56 crore were disbursed by the District Central Cooperative Bank to about 14,092 farmers, Rs. 5.95 crore as mid-term loan, Rs. 377.39 crore jewel loan to 85,422 persons, Rs. 7.76 crore loan to 458 SHGs, Rs.19 lakh to 102 differently abled persons and other loans worth Rs. 129.96 crore were disbursed to 10,592 persons.

Four cooperative pharmaceutical stores were opened in Harur, Dharmapuri, Pennagaram and Palacode. Medicines were sold at 15 per cent discount in these stores, the Minister added.
