The Andhra Pradesh government could not go ahead with its plan to construct a dam across Palar near Ganesapuram because of the efforts taken by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, said Law Minister Durai Murugan on Thursday.

He was responding to AIADMK MLA K. Panduranagam, who wanted the Chief Minister to use his proximity with the Congress government at the Centre to prevent construction of the dam.

As regards the reports that the neighbouring State had allocated Rs. 200 crore towards the construction, Mr. Durai Murgan said the money had not been spent.

He also dispelled the fears of Congress MLA C. Gnansekaran saying the canal that had been dug had nothing to do with the dam.

Earlier, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy recalled the letters written by the Chief Minister to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart and the Union Minister for Environment and Forests.

The Chief Minister had said the dam would not be in the interest of relations between the two States.

A team of officials who had visited the spot had reported that there was no work for the construction of the dam.
