As a fallout of the plummeting milk supply from Tamil Nadu, the territorial government has stopped providing milk to schoolchildren under the Rajiv Gandhi Breakfast Scheme.

Every day, students of all government schools are given biscuits and 150 ml of standardised hot milk in the morning as part of the breakfast scheme. Owing to a “huge drop” in the supply of milk from Tamil Nadu, where producers have gone on a strike, the Puducherry Co-operative Milk Producers Union (Ponlait) had communicated to the School Education Department its inability to supply milk.

According to a senior official, the students were not provided milk for the third consecutive day on Thursday.

The government was hoping that the supply situation would improve in the next few days. Asked whether any other item was provided in place of milk for the children, the official said that only biscuits were being provided at present.
