Water released from the Mettur reservoir reached the Upper Anicut (Mukkombu) on Saturday.

About 10,300 cusecs of water was released at the Upper Anicut on Saturday and shutters of the anicut were lifted this morning in the presence of C.Kannappan, executive engineer, Public Works Department (River Conservation Division), Tiruchi.

Water for irrigation would be released for irrigation in the delta from the Grand Anicut on Sunday morning.

According to PWD officials, water for irrigation would be released in the irrigation channels of Tiruchi district once the stipulated closure periods were over. Water would be released in the channels over the next few days. However, a decision of the release of water in the Uyyakondan River, where flood control project works were still underway, was yet to be taken. Mr.Kannappan has called for a consultative meeting with farmers next week to discuss the matter and finalise the date for releasing water.
