Collector R. Palanisamy inaugurated the construction of a memorial for former Chief Minister P. Ramasamy Reddiyar at his native place, Omandur, near here on Wednesday.
He said that the memorial was coming up on one acre of land acquired at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh. It would be completed in eight months.
There was also a proposal to beautify the place at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh. When Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi came to Villupuram for the inauguration of the Government Medical College Hospital at Mundiampakkam on March 7, he said that a memorial would be built for Ramasamy Reddiyar.
Later, he also made an announcement in the State Assembly. Subsequently, Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhudi inspected the site identified for the memorial.
During his visit to Tindivanam in September, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin suggested setting up of a park and construction of an arch, compound wall and overhead tank on the premises.
For undertaking these works to give a facelift to the memorial, additional proposals for Rs. 30 lakh had been sent to the government, Mr. Palanisamy said.
Badhri Naryanana, grandson of Ramasamy Reddiyar, Rohini Ramdas, Tindivanam Sub-Collector, M. Palanisamy, Public Relations Officer, and Manoharan, PWD Executive Engineer, were present.
