State Commission for Women will hold sittings in Sivaganga and Ramnad in May

TIRUCHI: The State Commission for Women will organise workshops in all districts on the Domestic Violence Act, chairperson K.M. Ramathal said on Wednesday.

The first such workshop would be held here in May, Ms. Ramathal told reporters at the end of a two-day sitting of the Commission to review the action taken on petitions received from the district.

The translation of the Act into Tamil was under way. Three lakh translated copies of the Act would be distributed to the rural women through self-help groups, she said. Though the Act had come into force in October last, there was little awareness, especially among rural women. The workshops were aimed at creating awareness of the Act and the role and functions of the Commission, she said.

Ms. Ramathal said that since she took charge as the chairperson in February, the Commission had received 400 petitions, 90 per cent of them relating to dowry harassment and the rest civil cases. Of the 69 petitions received from Tiruchi district, 26 were settled during the two-day sitting.

The Commission would hold sittings in Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts in May.
