COIMBATORE: As many as 700 students of the Coimbatore Medical College and 140 house surgeons went on a strike on Wednesday to oppose the reported move to increase in the duration of the MBBS course to six-and-a-half years. They also took out a procession inside the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital

Dean (In-Charge) of the college and hospital V. Kumaran said the medicos and the house surgeons boycotted out patient services from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. They returned to the out-patient wing after the “token strike” was over. Dr. Kumaran said services to patients were not affected as the house surgeons normally only assisted the doctors. Some of the doctors teaching at the medical college chipped in to offset any shortage of hands at the hospital, he said.
