Instruct hospitals to dispose of safely, they say

ERODE: For hospitals in places near Modakurichi, road margins seem to have become a dumpyard. Hundreds of used syringes, needles, cotton and other medical wastes are dumped on the road margins causing much inconvenience to residents.

In Erode district, with the help of the district administration and the Indian Medical Association, an arrangement has been made to dispose of the hospital wastes.

Every day, a private agency collects the wastes from all nursing homes and hospitals.

The wastes are then taken in a specially-designed container to Idapady where they are incinerated.

The agency is collecting fee from every hospital based on the bed strength.

But in rural areas, some hospitals are dumping the medical wastes on the road margins.

At Modakurichi, foul smell is emanating from the area because of the piled up wastes.

The residents said children were playing using the syringes and the needles.

They urged the district administration and also the local bodies to instruct the hospitals to dispose of the wastes safely.
