Media persons were irked by the action of police personnel who directed OB vans of two television channels to park the vehicles away from the venue where the People’s Movement against Sterlite staged an agitation on Thursday demanding closure of the Sterlite facility.

Superintendent of Police J. Rajendran said that in order to prevent any untoward incident at the agitation venue, Rajaji Park on Palayamkottai Road here, vehicles were instructed to move to a safer place. He said that a media person from a Tamil news television channel, who argued with him, was asked to produce the permission order issued by the police. The media person refused to produce the order, sought the support of other media personnel and together they staged a road blockade for a while, he said.

While the press person concerned alleged that a cable wire meant for live relay was disconnected by the cops, the SP denied the charge. The arguments between media persons and police personnel caught the attention of MDMK leader Vaiko, who asked the media personnel to maintain calm, charged the police personnel with having become agents of Sterlite.

The police were deliberately indulging in such acts to divert the attention of the agitators, Mr. Vaiko charged and demanded the transfer of the Collector and Superintendent of Police.
