Health Minister V.S. Vijay on Friday urged young doctors to combine academic excellence with taking responsibility for patients and society.

Presenting medals to students of The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University who scored the highest marks in undergraduate and post-graduate courses under medical, dental, Indian medicine and allied health sciences, Dr. Vijay said it was important that benefits of expanding medical knowledge and research outcomes reached the needy sections, especially the rural population.

The Minister, who is also Pro Chancellor of the University, sought to remind the students that along with the special privileges associated with being a healthcare professional came social responsibility.

“As tomorrow's healthcare professional, it is important that every student is aware of his or her responsibility towards the patients and society,” he said.

It is equally important to keep abreast of medical advances and apply new knowledge in practice, the Minister said. “As academically excelling students, you would set an example which your future generations would want to emulate,” he said.

Dr. Vijay also encouraged students to take up research as its results would guide improvements in health systems and lead to new initiatives.

About 175 students were felicitated on the occasion.

The Dr. MGR University Vice Chancellor Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, R. Srilakshmi, Registrar-in-Charge and Controller of Examinations-in-Charge Sivasangeetha also participated.
